While it may seem like a challenge to manage volunteer glyphosate-tolerant (GT) canola, good harvest management practices and pre-season planning including solid agronomic rotations can greatly improve your ability to properly manage the issue.

The first step to building an integrated weed management plan is to reduce the amount of loss out of the back of the combine. Less seeds left on the ground means less opportunity for volunteers in following years. The next most effective strategy to managing weeds, disease and insects is through a diverse crop rotation. This provides an opportunity to vary your herbicide program and manage weeds through different levels of competition. Implementing a four-year strategy will make life easier according to Jamie Mills, canola product line manager with Nutrien Ag Solutions.
